I would never have continued doing OJW if I did not get the kind of positive and generous feedback that I do.
Consequently, I measure success by gratitude expressed. I would have to say that by and large the OJW patients were pleased with the OJW procedure and what they had accomplished and the benefits they derived. Yes some never achieved their goals, some did, and regained it back. Moreover, at least one patient could not even tolerate OJW from the start and I removed it, alas that was Brooke in the film. I was at liberty to remove that part, but her mother, a well-known psychologist and registered nurse bid me leave it in since she believed that although OJW had been rejected by her daughter it was a valid and worthy approach to assist the overweight/obese help control their compulsive overeating.
At first I was tempted to remove the part dramatizing Brook's failure lest it "spoil" the rosy view of OJW that I wanted to portray. However, the need to be accurate, truthful and un biased kept nagging at me. Finally, my conscience compelled me to print what might be considered a very damaging revelation about my beloved OJW. And that is the way it will air worldwide when it is broadcast on the net in March.
I'm practicing orthodontics 35 years and I can count dozens of patients who did "successfully complete the process" as you put it. So my advice is that just because the bath water is dirty we don't throw away the baby.
I am confident that in time OJW will become a service that members of the dental community provide with pleasure in their own communities. I have no doubt that there will never cease to be members of the dental and medical community who look upon OJW with a jaundiced eye. I say offer the service, choose your patients carefully, do the OJW methodically and be responsive to patients needs.
I have created a
protocol which works for me and try to use it as a model. Of course I
deviate from that model as the situation sometimes calls for. The film
presents the basic protocol. I am convinced OJW has a rightful position in
the pantheon of weight control methods.
Most of the
compulsively overweight will applaud your efforts to help them and they will
not hold it against you if they regain the weight. They do expect
would-be providers to see to it that no harm is coming to them because of
the OJW.

Ted, I have performed OJW on only 4 patients, but none of them successfully completed the process and lost significant weight. When you did the survey of your patients what did you find? I find it difficult to encourage patient's to pursue OJW. I just got a call for someone from California and I am reluctant to proceed with such a history of poor results. Thanks for your input.Juliana Panchura, DMD jpanch@XXXcable.com

Subject: Subject: OJW for Dental Professionals: Preview of film by Dr. Ted Rothstein
Dear
Juliana:
The American Dental Association (ADA) has become cognizant of the fact that dental professionals have expertise that the overweight-obese could benefit from. The November 2010 cover story of the Journal of the American Dental Association attests to this thesis according to a massive survey that was carried out among dental professionals.
I am one of the 4% who have engaged in providing these services for the past twelve years, and have done so with a keen sense of satisfaction for myself and my patients.
"Orthodontic Jaw Wiring for Dental Professionals", is a documentary film I produced showing the protocol for OJW that will air worldwide on a date to be announced.
This 28-minute Documentary video is based on twelve years of clinical experience, and evidence from a questionnaire survey completed in 2009. See unpublished manuscript:
Orthodontic Jaw Wiring: The Dental Professional's Role in Weight Control for Compulsive Overeating Leading to Obesity

If the video should stall or stop, it can be made to continue by hitting the pause key two times.
Please forward this note to other colleagues who are interested in this topic.
I welcome your responses.
