Re: an omission in the article by Natasha Singer, NY Times, September 20, 2007, "Feeling Pudgy?..."s

Dear Associates of the  NY Times News Department:

Ps. (See letter sent earlier today below). Today I received an article related to my subspecialty OJW. I take pleasure in bringing it to your attention.

PPs:  " Fighting Obesity one Bite at a Time". (September 17, 2007, the Business section of the Philadelphia Inquirer). Here Denis Mulder, CEO of Small Bites Inc.  describes his invention as an "orthodontic device" tested on 50 patients in Europe, and about to start clinical trials next year in Philadelphia, It allows the patient to open, but only so wide as to enable the patient to take small bites.  is shown holding a model of the mouth showing the device. I have provided OJW to 65+ patients since 1989.

Four year ago our profession was alerted to the "DDS System" and you will find Scientific Intake's web site describing a removable orthodontic retainer-like device that is custom-fitted, which your wear when you eat. If I understand it correctly it forces you to take smaller bites, consequently, you eat more slowly and the "satiety center" in your brain says: "you are full" way earlier than YOU usually say it.   On their site you will see it described as "... a patented approach to eating less... a behavior modification system that retrains your eating habits without rewriting your menu" [See a photo of the DDS System Appliance].

Dear Associates of the  NY Times News Department:

In the article written by Natasha Singeron September 20 she provides an abridged history of  "...how some people have trimmed down--". She omitted one approach that has been popularly known for many years called Jaw Wiring.

Renamed "Orthodontic Jaw Wiring," this procedure is being provided by Dr. Rothstein to patients from coast to coast.  It was  reintroduced to the professions of medicine and dentistry in its current form eight years ago by Dr. Ted Rothstein, an orthodontist since 1973. The procedure is now called OJW (Orthodontic Jaw Wiring).

Jaw wiring as performed by oral surgeons is done for the treatment of trauma and certain pathology , and conservatively speaking is performed fifty thousand times a year wherein the teeth are wired together.

In OJW the teeth are wired apart. Consequently, the patient is limited to a liquid diet. It is especially useful for those persons who are addicted to food and have compulsive overeating food disorder.

OJW for the Control of Overweight may one day save someone's life: Unlike Bariatric surgery where 1/350 die, the mortality rate of OJW is zero  See the table clinic I presented on the subject*   and the table clinic I presented in Las Vegas May 2006.*

Especially see:  Orthodontic Jaw Wiring  (OJW) *  The Protocol for Providing OJW to Your Patients: A New Service in Dentistry Presented to: The Queens County Chapter of the AGD  by Ted Rothstein, DDS, PhD. Read  The OJW AGD Seminar Handout* and read the response* of an orthodontist who attended the seminar.
