OJW a unique occurrence

Shortly after placing brackets on her teeth they became grayish. See photo. The cause was traced to her liquid died which contained ample amounts
spinach and wheatgrass which were absorbed into the topmost still "porous" surface of her heath resulting from from the typical preparation  ("acid etching"*) of the teeth for bonding). This is a temporary effect which will be remedied by teeth whitening.

* In the etching process the chemical used for 60seconds removes the glassy, extremely thin, but hard surface of the tooth. rendering the surface of the tooth "frosty" looking. I liken this frosty-look to the glass you sometimes see in showers stalls. When the skin is removed it reveals the "tubules" that the teeth are composed of:

See what the teeth really looks like underneath the "skin"

Follow up photos will added.

Dear Toya:

Hope I put you at ease at the end of our hour-long telephone conversation. You had every reason to be worried and concerned.

I showed the photo to Brian and Sam and they agreed with my theory of how the grayness most likely occurred.

The typical preparation of the teeth  to make them frosty also makes them temporarily more porous (like a sponge). This permits the brackets to adhere tightly.

The spinach and wheat grass combination (that you created as part of your liquid diet) had some intense green coloration and that green color got sucked in the surface of the teeth causing them to turn gray including the porcelain tooth on the right side (bracket #2) since its surface was also rendered a bit more porous by the use of the chemicals typically used to prepare teeth for braces.

I am certain that the tooth surface underneath the bracket is normal in color (not greyish), And, I am certain that the greyness is limited to the exposed surface of the teeth not deep into the surface.

I am sure that if a bracket was removed the tooth surface underneath it  would  appear normal (not gray),

I am certain that teeth bleaching will restore the teeth to their normal whiteness.

When you return we can remove the three upper right brackets and do a whitening process on them to prove this theory.

In  the meantime, buy an toothpaste that is known for its whitening effectiveness and use it.

Take pics in 10 more days so we can  monitor any further changes.

Lets also consider the possibility that fumes from the chemicals you use (Sodium hydroxide in particular) may have also contributed by causing the bracket/wire to give off silver (gray) ions which interacted with the porous surface of the teeth and the green color given off by the combination of the liquid diet which also included strawberries which is also a powerful staining agent.

My porosity-leading to staining theory is supported by the anecdote I related to you about the patient whose teeth I whitened who proceeded to have a cup of black coffee soon after having her teeth whitened which in effect make the teeth more porous as well. The darkening she experienced was very distressing to me as well.  It did clear up and her teeth became normal again.

Look at chemicals you use on your patients.  Consider using a mask when you use strong chemicals. Take look at my video recital (see link below) re the ingredients of  so-called harmless shampoo, it's frightening. With great care and concern, Dr. Ted

Ps: I will make a special link to this letter to permit future OJW patients to be aware of this unique report from you. Thank you,

As I have told u yesterday, I HAVE NOT USED CHEMICALS  (SODIUM

HYDROXIDE) PERIOD >> SINCE

MY RETURN AND I RARELY DO ANY WAY... I ALSO WEAR A MASK EVERY TIME I USE COLOR ON A

CLIENT... SO THAT THEORY DOES NOT AND CAN NOT APPLY TO ME... ALSO I USE A STRAW EVERY TIME IM DRINKING MY SMOOTHIE ( which is in the morning ONLY and I didn't start adding the supplement containing wheatgrass "called Amazing meal" until I purchased it on 1-30-2011)  U said yourself you saw the grey color on the pics I sent u that I took on 1-26-2011which was one day after you placed OJW and I hadn't worked for 2 days after procedure anyway.. however I did add spinach to my smoothie that afternoon of the 26th...I wish u would have told me teeth could pick up stains when the adhesion stuff Was applied to my teeth. I  would have chosen another vegetable "IF" indeed that is the case......ALSO THIS MORNING I WAS VERY OBSERVANT WHILE drinking MY MORNING SMOOTHIE (which did not include anything green, although green and white shouldn't Make grey) AND WITH STRAW IT GOES STRAIGHT THRU TO THROAT WITHOUT GOING OVER MY TEETH... PLUS IM GARGLING WITH LISTERINE DIRECTLY AFTER ANYTHING GOES IN MY MOUTH. AND THIS MORNING I BRUSHED TEETH IMMEDIATELY AFTER SMOOTHIE..

BOTTOM LINE IS, IM TRUSTING AND PRAYING THAT MY TEETH WILL RETURN TO ITS NORMAL WHITE STATE AS IT WAS PRIOR TO THIS... My question of  "WILL THIS AFFECT MY TEETH ESPECIALLY MY PORCELAIN BRIDGES?" HAS ALWAYS BEEN A CONCERN OF MINE AND A QUESTION OF MINE SINCE DAY ONE.. SO I WILL KEEP

AN EYE ON IT TO MAKE SURE ITS NOT GETTING ANY DARKER... I HOPE THEY'RE NOT,  BECAUSE I WOULD HATE TO HAVE TO HAVE THIS REMOVED. IT'S HELPING ME

WITH NOT GIVING IN TO

NIGHT BINGING AS I THOUGHT IT WOULD....

PS.. I AM GOING TO PURCHASE THE LISTERINE PRE- BRUSH TOOTH WHITENING RINSE.....

TOYA...
