Let us begin by asking what is a "hit":
When you visited the home page of
Drted.com for the very first time the hitometer's score card increased by 26
hits because the front page is really composed of 26 different 'files."
When you went to "Site Additions" the hitometer added only 1 file
because the "site additions" page is actually only one file.
On November 3rd we added a "Hitometer" to
the bottom of the homepage of
the Drted website. The total number of hits starting from January 1st, 2000 up
to
Nov. 3rd was 576,913 so that was the starting number. In October of
2000 this
site recorded 130247 hits representing 4,433 visitors.
A hit is any response
from the server on behalf of a request sent from a browser. This includes any
response from the server, not only text files or documents. If, for example, a
HTML page has two images embedded, the server generates three hits if this page
is requested: one hit for the HTML page itself and two hits for the two inline
images. Another definition is:
1. The retrieval of any item, like a page or a graphic, from
a Web server.
For example, when a visitor calls up a Web
page with four graphics, that's five hits, one for the page and four for the
graphics. For this reason, hits often aren't a good indication of Web traffic.
See page view below.
2. Any time a piece of data matches criteria you set. For
example, each of the matches from a Yahoo
or any other search
engine search is called a hit.

PAGE VIEW:
The accessing of a Web
page. Often used by sites to give advertisers a sense of traffic, a page
view differs from a hit
by counting only the number of times a page has been accessed, whereas a hit
counts the number of times that all the elements in a page, including graphics,
have been accessed. Page views, however, have become tougher and tougher to
gauge, since pages can include frames
that divide them into separate parts.
UNIQUE SITES:
This is the sum of all unique hosts accessing the server
during a given time-window . The time-window is hardwired to the length of the
current month. This means that if a host accesses your server very often, it
gets counted only once during the whole month. Only the sum of the unique hosts
per month is listed in the statistics report.
